Failing to set up HP 5900 printer.

I have an HP Deskjet 5900 attached to an iMac, shared on my network.

I am attempting to add it to an Air running Mavericks 10.9.1

I go to the add printer dialogue and see the printer in the drop-down menu ("nearby printers"). When I select it the drop-down stus appears saying "Setting up HP..." then says "unable to download the software from the server at this time." Looking in the system logs I see the message: "1/20/14 12:43:14.609 PM PrintUITool[228]: Unable to get PPD file for shared printer: Bad Request" which suggests it will never work. If I go through the "Add Printer" dialogue, the only useful-looking driver is "HP Deskjet Series" which comes with the warning "The selected software is not from the manufacturer..." and does not work.

The situation is similar if I plug in the printer directly to the AIR. The printer does not appear in the add printer drop-down, but does appear correctly as a USB printer in the "Add Printer" dialogue - but no attempt is made to pull down a good driver.

Both the server (10.7.5) and the Air are fully up to date. Another machine on the network (a mini) runs Mavericks and works successfully with the printer.

I have tried a number of things, including resetting the printing system, but no different symptoms appear.

Help!

Do you have the current HP drivers installed on the Air? To get past the software update message, try deleting the /Library/Printers/hp folder and retrying software update. I am not sure if that will get you past the PPD error though.

If software update still doesn't work, you can download the HP drivers here:

Hope this helps.
